About this task

MOV is Apple’s QuickTime format, and iPhone videos often carry HEVC video inside it, which many Windows PCs, Android phones and websites cannot play. This page opens the video converter set to MP4, which gets H.264 video and AAC sound wherever your browser can encode them, the combination nearly every player supports.

An MOV that already holds H.264 is copied into the MP4 without re-encoding. HEVC video is decoded and encoded again frame by frame in your browser, so it needs a browser that can decode HEVC, such as Safari, or Chrome and Edge on most computers with hardware support. Up to 5 videos, 80 MB in total, go in one run, and each run may take at most 2 minutes, which suits short clips.

How to do it

  1. Choose or drop up to 5 MOV videos, 80 MB in total.
  2. Keep “Output format” on “MP4 (H.264 + AAC)”. For a smaller file, pick 720p under “Largest height”.
  3. Optionally enter a start and end time to keep only part of the clip.
  4. Select Run, preview the MP4 and download it.

Common questions

Why is the conversion slow, or why does it stop after 2 minutes?

HEVC to H.264 means decoding and encoding every frame, and a 4K clip takes much longer than 1080p. Choose 1080p or 720p under “Largest height”, or convert a shorter part with the start and end times.

Is anything lost when converting MOV to MP4?

Nothing for an MOV that already holds H.264 video, because the stream is copied. HEVC video is re-encoded, which can soften fine detail a little.

Do I need to convert iPhone videos at all?

Only if the other side cannot play them. You can also choose “Most Compatible” in the iPhone’s Settings, Camera, Formats so that new videos are recorded in H.264.
