About this tool
Set a countdown for cooking, a workout, a short break or a timed practice exam, or set an alarm to ring at a time of day, such as a reminder shortly before a meeting. The tone is generated by your browser, so there is no sound file to load.
Choose “Countdown” for minutes and seconds or “Alarm” for a time of day, then pick one of three tones and how long it rings, from 5 to 600 seconds. Keep the page open: browsers slow down timers in background tabs, and a closed page cannot ring. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose “Countdown” or “Alarm”.
- For a countdown, enter “Minutes” and “Seconds” (5 minutes by default). For an alarm, set “Ring at” to a time of day.
- Pick a “Sound”: “Chime”, “Beeps” or “Bell”, and set “Ring for (seconds)”, 30 by default. Select “Test sound” to check the volume.
- Select “Start” and allow notifications if the browser asks. Use “Cancel” to stop waiting, or “Stop ringing” when it goes off.
Common questions
Will it ring if the tab is in the background or closed?
In a background tab the page keeps running, but browsers run its timer less often, so the ring can come late; the remaining time is measured against the system clock, so it does not drift. A closed or reloaded page cannot ring, and the timer is not saved, so it is cancelled.
Why does it ask to show notifications?
When you select “Start”, the page asks for notification permission if you have not decided yet. If you allow it, a system notification saying “Time is up” appears when time runs out, which helps when you are in another window. Either way, the tab title flashes and the tone plays.
What happens if the alarm time has already passed today?
It rings at that time tomorrow. “Ring at” takes hours and minutes, and the page holds one countdown or alarm at a time, without repeats.
How long does it ring?
For the number of seconds set in “Ring for (seconds)”, from 5 to 600 (30 by default), repeating the tone during that time. You can end it sooner with “Stop ringing”.
Why is there no sound?
Browsers only allow audio after a click, so the sound is set up when you select “Start” or “Test sound”. Use “Test sound” before you start to make sure your device is not muted and the volume is right.
