About this task
Some government and exam portals limit each document, such as an ID card, certificate or mark sheet, to 200 KB. This page opens the PDF compressor with a 200 KB target at the Strong level, so images start at 110 DPI and, if the file is still too large, go down as far as 60 DPI until it fits.
200 KB suits a document of a few scanned pages; a long scan will not get there with its text kept. If the report says TARGET_UNREACHED, switch “Method” to “Rasterize every page (for scans)”: each page becomes one compressed image and the 200 KB is shared between them, at the cost of selectable text. Your PDF stays in your browser throughout.
How to do it
- Choose or drop the PDF files, up to 10 at a time.
- Keep “Compression” on Strong and “Target size (KB, 0 for no target)” at 200.
- Select Run and check the size and DPI in the report.
- If the target was not reached, choose “Rasterize every page (for scans)” and run again, then download the PDF.
Common questions
Why doesn’t my scanned certificate get smaller?
Black-and-white scans are often stored as CCITT or JBIG2 images, which the image method keeps as they are. Rasterizing the pages compresses those PDFs as well.
Is the PDF still readable at 60 DPI?
Large print and photos usually are, but small print in scans often is not. Zoom in on the result before uploading; if it is too blurry, remove pages you do not need with the delete pages tool and compress again.
Can I compress several documents to 200 KB each?
Yes. Up to 10 PDFs go in one run and the target applies to each file separately, so every document gets its own 200 KB.
