About this tool

Write HTML, CSS and JavaScript in three panes and see the page run right below them, together with its console output. Use it to try a snippet from a tutorial, test a layout or a small script without setting up a project, or show someone a quick demo.

By default the page reruns 0.8 seconds after you stop typing, and console messages and uncaught errors appear in the console panel. The code runs in an isolated frame in your browser and is not uploaded; external scripts, styles and images it links to are loaded by your browser. You can download everything as one HTML file.

How to use it

  1. Edit the sample code in the “HTML”, “CSS” and “JavaScript” panes, or select “Clear” to start from empty panes. The Tab key inserts two spaces.
  2. Leave “Run as I type” on to rerun the page whenever you pause, or turn it off and select “Run” when you are ready.
  3. Check the page in the result frame, and read console.log output and errors under “Console”.
  4. Select “Download HTML” to save the three panes as a single page.html file.

Common questions

Can I paste a complete HTML page?

Yes. If the HTML pane contains an <html> tag, it is used as it is: the CSS is added inside its <head> and the JavaScript just before </body>. Otherwise the HTML goes into the body of a new page.

Can I use libraries from a CDN?

Yes. Add a <script> or <link> tag to the HTML pane. The frame allows external scripts, styles and images, and your browser loads them directly.

Why don’t localStorage or cookies work?

The frame is sandboxed without this site’s origin, so the code cannot read this site’s cookies or data, and browser storage such as localStorage, sessionStorage and cookies is not available to it.

What shows up in the console panel?

Output from console.log, console.info, console.warn and console.error, uncaught errors (with a line number when the browser gives one) and unhandled promise rejections. Objects are shown as JSON, and the panel keeps the last 200 entries.

Is my code saved?

No. The code lives only in this page and is lost when you reload or close it, so use “Download HTML” to keep a copy. The downloaded file leaves out the helper script the page adds to capture console output.
