About this tool

Write Markdown and see it rendered next to the editor as you type. Use it to draft a README, a blog post or release notes, check how a table or a code block will look, or turn Markdown into HTML that you can paste somewhere else.

Headings, bold and italic text, lists, links, tables, strikethrough, quotes and code blocks are supported, and bare web addresses become links. A toolbar inserts common syntax, and you can download a .md file or a styled HTML page, or copy the HTML. Everything runs in this page in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste Markdown into the editor, which starts with a short sample.
  2. Use the toolbar to insert bold, italic, a heading, a link, inline code, a code block, a list, a quote or a table at the cursor. With text selected, bold, italic, link and code wrap the selection.
  3. Check the preview, which updates as you type, and the character count below it.
  4. Select “Download .md” for the Markdown file, “Download HTML page” for a styled document.html, or “Copy HTML” to copy the rendered HTML.

Common questions

Why does a single line break not show in the preview?

Markdown joins lines that are not separated by a blank line into one paragraph. Leave an empty line to start a new paragraph, or end a line with two spaces or a backslash to force a line break.

Can I use HTML tags in the Markdown?

Yes, but the result is cleaned: scripts, event handlers such as onclick and javascript: links are removed. This applies to the preview, the copied HTML and the downloaded page.

Why are images from other sites missing from the preview?

The preview only loads this site’s resources, so external images are not shown there. They do appear in the downloaded HTML page.

Are task lists, footnotes or math formulas supported?

No. The editor uses standard Markdown plus tables and strikethrough. Task lists, footnotes, math formulas and syntax highlighting in code blocks are not supported.

Is my text saved?

No. The text lives only in this page and is lost when you reload or close it, so select “Download .md” to keep it.
