About this tool
Enter a date of birth to see the exact age in years, months and days, the Chinese nominal age (虚岁), the number of days lived and how long it is until the next birthday. Use it for forms that ask for an age, to check whether someone has turned 18 by a given date, or to look up a star sign and zodiac animal.
Age can be worked out for today or for any other date from 1901 to 2099, and the page also shows the date of birth in the Chinese lunar calendar. Everything is calculated in your browser, and the dates are not uploaded.
How to use it
- Pick the “Date of birth”, or set it with one of the “Born this many years ago” buttons.
- Leave “Age on” as today, or change it to the date you need, such as an exam or contract date.
- Read the age in years, then the table: exact age, nominal age, days lived, next birthday, star sign, Chinese zodiac and lunar date of birth.
Common questions
How is 虚岁 different from the exact age?
Exact age counts the birthdays already passed. The nominal age (虚岁) is 1 at birth and goes up by one at each Chinese New Year, so it is usually one or two years more than the exact age.
Why is my zodiac animal not the one for my birth year?
The zodiac year begins at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January. Someone born on 20 January 1990, before that year’s Chinese New Year, is a Snake rather than a Horse.
What if I was born on 29 February?
In years without 29 February, the birthday is counted on 28 February, both for the next birthday and for the exact age.
Can I enter a lunar birthday?
No. “Date of birth” takes a Gregorian date, the page shows the matching lunar date, and the next birthday is the Gregorian one. To turn a lunar date into a Gregorian date first, use Lunar calendar converter.
