About this tool
Check that a webcam or phone camera works. Use it before a video call, an online class or a stream to see your picture, to make sure an external camera is detected, or to find out which resolution and frame rate a camera really delivers.
Choose a camera and a requested resolution from 640×480 to 3840×2160; the page shows the camera’s name, actual resolution and frame rate. You can mirror the picture and save a photo as PNG. The browser asks for camera access only, not the microphone, and the picture is shown in this page only; it is not recorded or uploaded.
How to use it
- Select “Start camera” and allow camera access when the browser asks.
- Read the camera’s name, actual resolution and frame rate under the picture.
- To try another camera or resolution, choose it under “Camera” or “Requested resolution”, then select “Stop” and “Start camera” again.
- Tick or untick “Mirror”, and select “Save a photo” to download the current picture as camera.png.
- Select “Stop” when you are done to turn the camera off.
Common questions
Why is the actual resolution different from the one I chose?
The “Requested resolution” is only a preference. If the camera does not support it, the browser picks a resolution it can deliver, and the page shows what you actually get, so a camera without 4K gives less than 3840×2160.
Why does the list only show “Default”?
Browsers do not reveal camera names before you allow access. After you start the camera once, “Camera” lists every camera the browser can see.
What if the camera cannot be opened?
If the page says access was refused, allow the camera for this site in the address bar and try again. If it says another program may be using the camera, close apps such as video meeting software first.
Is the saved photo mirrored?
It follows “Mirror”, which is on by default: then the preview and the photo are flipped like a mirror. Untick it to save the picture the way the camera sees it. The photo is a PNG at the actual resolution.
Is the video recorded or uploaded?
No. The picture is only shown in this page. A single image is created only when you select “Save a photo”, and it is downloaded straight to your device. The camera turns off when you select “Stop” or leave the page.
