Microphone test

Check a microphone with a live waveform and level meter, and record five seconds to play back.

About this tool

Check that a microphone picks up sound and how loud it is. Use it before a voice call, a video meeting, an online class or a recording, to make sure a headset or USB microphone is detected, or to hear how your voice sounds.

The page shows a live waveform with frequency bars, the input level in dBFS with its peak, and the device’s name and sample rate. You can record five seconds and play them back. The browser asks for microphone access only; sound is analysed in this page, the test recording stays in the browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Select “Start test” and allow microphone access when the browser asks.
  2. Speak into the microphone and watch the waveform and the level meter. The numbers next to the meter show the current level and the peak.
  3. Select “Record 5 s and play back”, then listen to the recording in the player that appears.
  4. To test another microphone, choose it under “Microphone”, then select “Stop” and “Start test” again.

Common questions

What does “No signal” mean?

The browser is receiving complete silence from the device. Check that the microphone is not muted in your system settings or by a switch on the device, or pick another one under “Microphone”.

How do I read the dBFS numbers?

0 dBFS is the loudest sound the input can carry, so the values are negative and get closer to 0 as the sound gets louder. The meter covers −60 to 0 dBFS; if the peak keeps reaching 0, the input is too loud and may distort.

Is the test recording uploaded or saved?

It is not uploaded. The five-second recording is kept in this page only so you can play it back; a new recording replaces it, and it is gone when you leave the page.

Why is my microphone not in the list?

Browsers do not reveal device names before you allow access. After you select “Start test” and allow it, “Microphone” lists every input. If you plug in a new device, start the test again to refresh the list.
