Extract audio from video (MP4 to MP3)

Take the sound out of MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM video and convert it to MP3, M4A, OGG, WebM or WAV, or keep the track unchanged in its own container, optionally trimmed. Files are not uploaded.

About this tool

Convert MP4 to MP3 by taking the sound out of a video, for example to keep the audio of a lecture, interview or concert recording, to get background music for editing, or to make a file you can listen to without the picture.

Choose MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM videos, up to 5 at a time and 80 MB in total. Save the sound as MP3, M4A, OGG, WebM or WAV, or keep the original track without re-encoding, and cut out a time range if you like. Everything runs in your browser, and the videos are not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose up to 5 videos, or drop them on the page.
  2. Pick the “Output format”. “MP3” is the default; “Original track, unchanged” copies the sound as it is, and the other options convert it.
  3. When converting, set the bitrate (192 kbps by default), sample rate and channels, or keep those of the video.
  4. To keep only part of the sound, fill in “Start” and “End” in seconds or m:ss, such as 90 or 1:30. Leave them empty for the whole video.
  5. Select Run, play each result on the page, then download it.

Common questions

How do I convert an MP4 video to MP3?

Choose the video, keep “MP3” as the “Output format” and select Run. Your browser decodes the sound track and the LAME encoder (lame.sourceforge.io) turns it into MP3 at 192 kbps, unless you pick another bitrate. The result is named after the video, such as lecture.mp3. LAME is loaded as a separate file only for MP3; its license and source are listed in /THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt.

What file do I get with “Original track, unchanged”?

The sound is copied without re-encoding into the file type made for its codec: AAC becomes M4A, MP3 stays MP3, Opus and Vorbis become OGG, FLAC stays FLAC, and PCM becomes a WAV with the same bit depth. Other codecs are decoded and saved as WAV. The bitrate, sample rate and channels do not apply.

How do I write the start and end times?

Use seconds, minutes and seconds, or hours, minutes and seconds, such as 90, 1:30, 1:30.5 or 0:01:30. The start must be before the end and within the video; an end past the last second simply stops at the end.

Is the original track still copied when I cut out a range?

Yes. With “Original track, unchanged” and a start or end time, MP3, AAC, Opus, Vorbis and FLAC tracks are still copied, in whole audio frames, so each end can reach up to about a tenth of a second past the time you entered. PCM tracks are saved as WAV with the same bit depth. Converted formats are cut at the times you enter.

Why does a video fail?

Your browser decodes the sound, so a track in a codec it cannot decode gives an error that says so; some MKV files carry AC-3 or DTS sound, for example. A video without a sound track fails too. Converting to OGG or WebM also needs the browser’s encoder. MP3 and WAV are written by the tool itself, and M4A by FFmpeg’s AAC encoder (ffmpeg.org, listed in /THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt) where the browser has none, as in Firefox.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The sound is extracted and encoded in your browser, and the files stay on your device.
