Convert audio to MP3, M4A, OGG or WAV

Convert MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC and WebM audio to MP3, M4A, OGG, WebM or WAV, with bitrate, sample rate and channels. MP3 is encoded with LAME and the other formats by the browser; files are not uploaded.

About this tool

Convert audio to MP3 or another format in your browser: turn a WAV recording or a FLAC album into MP3 for any player, make an M4A for your phone, an OGG or WebM file for a web page, or a WAV for editing. You can change the bitrate, sample rate and channels at the same time.

MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC and WebM files can be read, up to 10 at a time and 80 MB in total. MP3 is encoded with the LAME encoder, which the page loads only when you choose MP3; M4A, OGG and WebM are encoded by your browser, and M4A by FFmpeg’s AAC encoder in browsers that have none, such as Firefox. Files are converted on your device and are not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose up to 10 audio files, or drop them on the page.
  2. Pick the “Output format”: “MP3”, the default, “M4A (AAC)”, “OGG (Opus)”, “WebM (Opus)” or “WAV (uncompressed)”.
  3. Set the “Bitrate”, 192 kbps by default, and the “Sample rate” and “Channels”, or keep those of the source.
  4. Select Run, play each result on the page, then download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.

Common questions

Which bitrate should I choose for MP3?

192 kbps, the default, suits music and takes about 1.4 MB per minute. 128 kbps is enough for speech and makes smaller files; 256 or 320 kbps keep more detail. “Encoder default” encodes MP3 at 320 kbps, or copies an MP3 unchanged when the sample rate and channels are kept. The bitrate does not apply to WAV, whose size depends only on the sample rate and channels.

Which encoders make the MP3 and M4A files?

MP3 is made by LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder (lame.sourceforge.io), compiled to WebAssembly and loaded as a separate file the first time you convert to MP3. M4A is made by your browser’s AAC encoder; browsers without one, such as Firefox, load FFmpeg’s AAC encoder (ffmpeg.org) the same way instead. Both run on your device, and their licenses and source are listed in the site’s third-party notices at /THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt.

Why does a file fail to convert?

Your browser decodes the source and encodes OGG and WebM, and the error says which step is missing: the browser cannot decode the source codec, or it cannot encode the codec the chosen format needs. MP3, M4A and WAV do not need the browser’s encoders, so try one of them, or another browser.

Does converting to WAV or a higher bitrate improve the sound?

No. Detail lost in an MP3 or another compressed file cannot be brought back by converting it. A higher bitrate or WAV only stores the decoded sound with less or no further loss, which makes the file larger.

Can I convert the sound of a video to MP3?

WebM videos are accepted here, and only their sound is kept. For MP4, MOV or MKV videos, use “Extract audio from video (MP4 to MP3)”.
