About this tool
Scan QR codes and barcodes live with a webcam or your phone’s camera. Use it to read a product barcode when you have no scanner, to read a QR code on paper or on another phone’s screen from your computer, or to see what a code contains before you open its link.
It reads QR codes, Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec and 1D barcodes such as EAN-13 and Code 128, up to 4 codes per frame, and lists each code once. Links are shown, not opened. The camera picture is read in this page only; it is not recorded or uploaded.
How to use it
- Select “Start scanning” and allow camera access when the browser asks.
- Hold the QR code or barcode in front of the camera. Each new code appears at the top of “Codes found”.
- To use another camera, pick it under “Camera”, then select “Stop” and “Start scanning” again. On phones the default is the back camera.
- Select “Copy” to copy a code’s text. Web addresses get an “Open” link; check the address before you select it.
- Select “Stop” to turn the camera off, and “Clear” to empty the list.
Common questions
Will a scanned link open by itself?
No. Links are only shown as text. Addresses starting with http:// or https:// get an “Open” link, and they open in a new tab only when you select it.
Why is a code not being recognised?
The whole code needs to be in the picture and in focus, so move it closer or further away until it is sharp. Scanning uses fast recognition to keep up with the camera; for a small or blurry code, take a photo or screenshot and use “QR code and barcode reader” with “Try harder” on.
Why does a code appear only once?
A code with the same text and format is listed once, so holding it in front of the camera does not fill the list. The list keeps the 50 most recent codes.
What if camera access was refused?
The page then says camera access was refused. Allow the camera for this site in the address bar, then select “Start scanning” again.
Is the camera picture recorded or uploaded?
No. Frames are read in this page and then discarded. The camera turns off when you select “Stop” or leave the page.
