About this tool

Split an animated GIF into separate still images. Use it to pick one frame of a meme or animation as a cover or screenshot, to check an animation frame by frame, or to export frames for editing before you put them back together.

Each frame is composited in full, the way a viewer shows it, not just the part that changed. Save frames as PNG, WebP or JPG, or keep only every Nth frame. Up to 5 GIFs per run, each up to 20 MB and 500 frames, 40 MB in total. Files stay in your browser and are not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose up to 5 animated GIFs, or drop them on the page. You can also select Use example.
  2. Pick the “Frame format”: PNG, WebP or JPG. To keep only some frames, set “Keep every Nth frame”; 2 keeps every other frame.
  3. For JPG, type a #RRGGBB colour into “JPEG background” to fill transparent areas. It is white by default.
  4. Select Run, preview the frames, then download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.

Common questions

Why do the file numbers skip?

Each number is the frame’s position in the original GIF, starting at 001. With “Keep every Nth frame” set to 3 you get 001, 004, 007 and so on, so you can tell which frame each image is.

Why is every frame a full picture?

Many GIFs store only the changed part of later frames to save space. The tool applies each frame’s transparency and disposal setting, so every image matches what plays on screen and has the GIF’s full width and height.

Is transparency kept?

PNG and WebP keep transparent areas. JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas are filled with the “JPEG background” colour.

Are the frame delays kept?

No. Each frame is saved as a separate still image without timing. To turn edited frames back into an animation, use “Make an animated GIF”, which takes up to 100 images.

What are the limits?

Each GIF can be up to 20 MB with at most 500 frames and 4 megapixels, such as 2000×2000. One run takes up to 5 files and 40 MB in total. If any limit is exceeded, the run stops with an error instead of processing part of the files.
