About this tool
Turn a folder into a text tree like the one the tree command prints, for a project README, documentation, a support request or a quick look at what a folder contains. You can limit the depth, leave out folders such as node_modules, show only folders and add sizes.
Folders come first and names are sorted with numbers in order, so file2 comes before file10. Copy the tree as plain text or as a Markdown code block, or download it as tree.txt. Only names and sizes are read in your browser; file contents are not opened or uploaded.
How to use it
- Drop a folder on the page, or select “Choose a folder” and pick one.
- Set “Depth (0 = all)” to limit how many levels are opened, and edit “Ignore (comma separated, * wildcard)”, which starts with node_modules, .git, .DS_Store and Thumbs.db.
- Tick “Folders only” or “Show sizes” if you need them. The tree updates as soon as you change an option.
- Select “Copy”, “Copy as Markdown” or “Download .txt”.
Common questions
How do ignore patterns work?
Each pattern is compared with the name of every file and folder, ignoring case, and * matches any run of characters, so *.log hides all log files. An ignored folder disappears together with everything inside it.
Why are empty folders missing?
With “Choose a folder”, the browser only lists files, so empty folders cannot appear. Drag the folder onto the page instead, and empty folders are shown too.
What size does “Show sizes” give a folder?
A folder’s size is the total of the files inside it, not counting ignored files. Sizes use 1024-based units such as KB and MB, with one decimal place.
Is anything uploaded when I choose a folder?
No. Your browser may ask you to confirm access to the folder, but the page only reads each file’s path and size. It never opens the contents or sends anything to a server.
Can I paste the tree into a README?
Yes. “Copy as Markdown” wraps the tree in a ``` code block, so its lines and indentation stay intact when the Markdown is rendered.
