Remove background noise from video

Clean the sound of MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos: hum, hiss, wind, fans and room noise are removed from speech by RNNoise in your browser. The picture is copied as it is; only the sound is encoded again.

About this tool

Remove background noise from the sound of MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos: hum, hiss, wind, fans, air conditioning, traffic and room noise are taken out from behind the speech, for example in a vlog, an interview, a recorded lecture or a video call. Only the sound changes, and the videos are not uploaded.

The cleaning is done in your browser by RNNoise, a small neural network for speech by Xiph.Org and Mozilla. The picture is copied packet for packet, so it keeps its quality and rotation, and only the sound is encoded again: as AAC in MP4 and MOV, and as Opus in WebM and MKV, at about the bitrate of the original. Up to 5 videos, 80 MB in total, go in one run, and each keeps its format and file name.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop up to 5 MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV videos, 80 MB in total.
  2. Set the “Strength (% of the noise removed)” from 10 to 100. The default, 100, removes as much noise as it can; lower values mix part of the original sound back in.
  3. Select Run, play the result in the preview and download it, or download all of them as a ZIP.

Common questions

Does it lower the video quality?

No. The picture is copied packet for packet without re-encoding, so its quality, resolution and rotation stay the same. Only the sound is encoded again, at 48 kHz and at about the bitrate of the original, between 96 and 192 kbps.

What noise does it remove, and what does it not suit?

Noise behind a voice: hum, hiss, wind, fans, air conditioning, traffic and the noise of a room. It is made for speech, so background music and other sounds in the video can be removed along with the noise; it does not suit music videos. Below a strength of 100, part of the original sound is mixed back in, which keeps some of the background.

Why do I get an error?

A video without sound has nothing to clean and gives an error, and so does a video whose sound the browser cannot decode. All current browsers decode AAC and Opus, the usual sound in MP4, MOV and WebM, but some MKV files carry sound such as AC-3 or DTS that many browsers cannot decode.

Does it work in Firefox?

Yes. Firefox has no AAC encoder of its own, so for MP4 and MOV videos the page loads FFmpeg’s AAC encoder as a separate file when it is needed. WebM and MKV use Opus, which Firefox encodes itself.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read, cleaned and written again in your browser and stays on your device.

Remove background noise from audio

Clean up voice recordings, podcasts, lectures and calls by removing hum, hiss, fans, traffic and other background noise with RNNoise, a small neural network that runs in your browser. Save as MP3, M4A, OGG, WebM or WAV.

Extract audio from video (MP4 to MP3)

Take the sound out of MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM video and convert it to MP3, M4A, OGG, WebM or WAV, or keep the track unchanged in its own container, optionally trimmed. Files are not uploaded.

Compress video

Make MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos smaller by quality level, target file size or bitrate, with an optional resolution limit. Encodes H.264 (MP4), VP9 (WebM) or AV1 (MP4) with the browser’s own encoder.

Convert video format

Convert between MP4, WebM, MKV and MOV; MP4 and MOV get H.264 video and AAC sound so any player opens them, and other formats copy streams when they can. Scale down, remove the sound or trim at the same time. Encoding uses the browser.

Crop video

Crop the picture of MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos to one region, in pixels or percent, to cut off black bars, a watermark corner or anything outside the subject. The sound is kept as it is.

Remove audio from video

Mute MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos by removing the audio track. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so its quality, resolution and rotation stay exactly the same.
