About this tool

Remove background noise from voice recordings: hum, hiss, fans, air conditioning, traffic and keyboard clicks are taken out from behind the speech in MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC and WebM files, for example to clean up a podcast, a lecture, an interview, a voice memo or a recorded call. The files are processed in your browser and are not uploaded.

The cleaning is done by RNNoise, a small neural network for speech by Xiph.Org and Mozilla, made for calls. It is compiled to WebAssembly and loaded with the page’s code, about 4.8 MB, so there is no separate model to download, and it is fast: on a desktop computer about 16 times faster than real time for each channel. Up to 10 files, 80 MB in total, go in one run and are saved as MP3, M4A, OGG, WebM or WAV under their original names.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop up to 10 MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC or WebM files, 80 MB in total.
  2. Set the “Strength (% of the noise removed)” from 10 to 100. The default, 100, removes as much noise as it can; lower values mix part of the original back in for a more natural sound.
  3. Pick the “Output format” and “Bitrate”: MP3 at 192 kbps by default, or M4A (AAC), OGG (Opus), WebM (Opus) or uncompressed WAV.
  4. Select Run, listen to the results and download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.

Common questions

What kind of noise does it remove?

Steady and changing noise behind a voice: hum, hiss, fans, air conditioning, traffic, keyboard typing and the noise of a room. It is made for speech, so voices stay while the rest is lowered. It does not suit music: instruments can be removed along with the noise.

When should I lower the strength?

At 100 the cleaned sound is used on its own. Below 100, the original recording is mixed back in: at 70, the result is 70% cleaned sound and 30% original, so a little of the background stays and the voice can sound more natural. If the result sounds too processed, try a lower strength.

Does it shift the timing or change the sample rate?

The result lines up with the original sample for sample and has the same length: RNNoise’s 20 ms delay is taken out, so the cleaned file can replace the original track in a video editor. It is saved at 48 kHz, the rate the network works at; mono and stereo files keep their channels, each cleaned on its own.

Can I clean the sound of a video?

Yes, with “Remove background noise from video”, which uses the same cleaning and copies the picture without re-encoding it. WebM videos can also be cleaned here, which gives an audio file.

Are my recordings uploaded?

No. The noise is removed in your browser and the files stay on your device; apart from the page itself, nothing needs to be downloaded.
