Rotate and flip videos

Turn MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos by 90°, 180° or 270° and flip them like a mirror. A sideways phone video is fixed in seconds: MP4 and MOV are turned by their rotation flag, without re-encoding.

About this tool

Rotate a video by 90°, 180° or 270° and flip it like a mirror: MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos keep their format and file name, and nothing is uploaded. Use it to fix a phone video that plays sideways or upside down, or to mirror a selfie video.

MP4 and MOV videos carry a rotation flag that players follow, so by default only that flag is changed: the video and sound are copied as they are, which takes seconds, loses no quality and works in any browser, even for codecs it cannot play. WebM and MKV have no such flag and are always re-encoded, as is any flip. Up to 10 videos, 80 MB in total, go in one run.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop up to 10 MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV videos, 80 MB in total.
  2. Pick how to “Rotate”: “90° clockwise”, “180°”, “90° anticlockwise” or “Do not rotate”, and a “Flip” if you need a mirror image.
  3. For MP4 and MOV, keep “Fast: set the rotation flag, no quality loss”, or choose “Re-encode the frames (for apps that ignore the flag)”.
  4. Select Run, play the result in the preview and download it, or download all of them as a ZIP.

Common questions

How do I fix a sideways phone video?

Add the video, choose “90° clockwise” if the top of the picture is on the left or “90° anticlockwise” if it is on the right, and select Run. For an MP4 or MOV only the rotation flag changes, so it is done in seconds and the quality stays the same.

Why does the video still look sideways in some apps?

A few apps and editors ignore the rotation flag and show the frames as they are stored. Run the original video again with “Re-encode the frames (for apps that ignore the flag)”, which turns the frames themselves; this takes longer, and the picture is encoded again.

Why are WebM and MKV videos re-encoded?

These formats have no rotation flag, so the frames themselves have to be turned. That needs a browser that can decode and encode the video’s codec; Chrome and Edge handle the most. Where the browser can, the picture is saved as H.264 in MKV and as VP9 in WebM, and the sound is copied unchanged.

Can I flip a video without re-encoding?

No. A flip changes the picture itself, so the video is re-encoded even when it is an MP4 or MOV. The sound is still copied unchanged.

Local first

Extract audio from video (MP4 to MP3)

Take the sound out of MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM video and convert it to MP3, M4A, OGG, WebM or WAV, or keep the track unchanged in its own container, optionally trimmed. Files are not uploaded.

Compress video

Make MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos smaller by quality level, target file size or bitrate, with an optional resolution limit. Encodes H.264 (MP4), VP9 (WebM) or AV1 (MP4) with the browser’s own encoder.

Convert video format

Convert between MP4, WebM, MKV and MOV; MP4 and MOV get H.264 video and AAC sound so any player opens them, and other formats copy streams when they can. Scale down, remove the sound or trim at the same time. Encoding uses the browser.

Crop video

Crop the picture of MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos to one region, in pixels or percent, to cut off black bars, a watermark corner or anything outside the subject. The sound is kept as it is.

Remove background noise from video

Clean the sound of MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos: hum, hiss, wind, fans and room noise are removed from speech by RNNoise in your browser. The picture is copied as it is; only the sound is encoded again.

Remove audio from video

Mute MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos by removing the audio track. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so its quality, resolution and rotation stay exactly the same.
