Compress video for Discord

Make a clip small enough for Discord’s 20 MB free upload limit, as an MP4 that plays right in the chat. Compressed in your browser, never uploaded here.

About this task

Without Nitro, Discord takes files up to 20 MB; it raised the free limit from 10 MB in August 2026. This page opens the video compressor with a 19 MB target, a little under the limit so the upload never fails by a few bytes, and H.264 MP4 output, which Discord plays inline on desktop and mobile.

Game clips, screen recordings and phone videos are compressed in your browser, so they are not uploaded anywhere before you post them. A one-minute 1080p clip keeps its resolution; longer ones are scaled down until they fit. 60 fps recordings drop to 30 fps, which matters little in a chat window.

How to do it

  1. Choose or drop your clip, for example an MP4 from OBS, Xbox Game Bar or your phone.
  2. Keep “Target size” at 19 MB, or enter 49 for Nitro Basic’s 50 MB limit.
  3. Select Run and check that the new size is under the limit.
  4. Download the MP4 and drag it into Discord.

Common questions

What is Discord’s file size limit?

20 MB per file without Nitro, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and 500 MB with Nitro. This page’s 19 MB target suits the free limit; enter a larger one if you have Nitro.

Why does my clip look blurry after compressing?

A long or fast-moving clip has to share 19 MB across many frames. Trim it to the moment that matters first; a 30-second clip gets twice the bitrate of a one-minute one and looks much sharper.

Should I pick VP9 WebM for Discord?

Discord plays WebM too, and VP9 looks better than H.264 at the same size. Choose it under “Video codec” if your friends use Discord in a browser or the desktop app; H.264 MP4 is the safer choice for phones.
