About this task
A GIF plays by itself, loops and shows up in places where a video does not, such as many chat apps, README files, wikis and email signatures. This page opens the video to GIF converter at 480 pixels wide and 10 frames per second, a good balance between smooth motion and a file people can open quickly.
Pick the few seconds you want with a start and end time; a GIF holds up to 600 frames, which is a minute at 10 fps. The MP4 is decoded and the GIF encoded on your own device, so the video is not uploaded, and nothing is added to the picture.
How to do it
- Choose or drop an MP4. MOV, WebM and MKV videos work too, up to 5 at once and 80 MB in total.
- Enter the “Start” and “End” of the part you want, for example 4 and 9 for five seconds.
- Keep 480 px and 10 fps, or choose 320 px for a smaller file or 15 fps for smoother motion.
- Select Run, check the GIF’s size and preview, and download it.
Common questions
How big will my GIF be?
It depends mostly on width, frame rate and length, and on how busy the picture is. Five seconds at 480 px and 10 fps is usually a few megabytes; still scenes are much smaller, and grainy, fast-moving footage is larger. The size of each GIF is shown next to it before you download.
Can I make a GIF from just the middle of a video?
Yes. Enter the start and end of that part in seconds or minutes and seconds, such as 1:12 and 1:18. Only those frames go into the GIF.
Why does my GIF look grainy?
A GIF can only use 256 colours per frame, so smooth gradients such as sky or skin show bands or dots. Keeping “Colours per frame” at 256 gives the best result; fewer colours make the file smaller but grainier.
