About this task
M4A is AAC audio in an MP4 container, used by iPhone Voice Memos, songs bought from the iTunes Store and many recorders. Some car stereos, older players and upload forms accept only MP3, so this page opens the audio converter set to MP3 at 192 kbps.
Converting from one lossy format to another cannot add quality, so a bitrate above the source’s gains nothing: 192 kbps keeps the sound of a typical 128 to 256 kbps AAC file. Up to 10 files, 80 MB in total, are decoded by your browser and encoded with LAME on your device.
How to do it
- Choose or drop up to 10 M4A files.
- Keep “Output format” on MP3 and “Bitrate” at 192 kbps; for voice memos, 96 or 128 kbps is plenty.
- Select Run and play the results on the page.
- Download each MP3, or all of them as a ZIP.
Common questions
Why does an M4A song fail to convert?
Songs with copy protection, such as Apple Music downloads and older iTunes M4P files, cannot be decoded by a browser. Unprotected M4A files, including voice memos and iTunes Store purchases from 2009 onward, convert normally.
Will the MP3 be larger than the M4A?
Often a little, because AAC is more efficient than MP3. At 192 kbps an MP3 takes about 1.4 MB per minute; a voice memo converted at 96 kbps takes about 0.7 MB per minute.
Can I convert MP3 back to M4A?
Yes: add the MP3 files and choose “M4A (AAC)” as the output format. Each conversion between lossy formats loses a little, so keep the originals.
