About this task
Save the sound of an MP4 as an MP3 to listen to a lecture, podcast recording or concert video without the picture, or to use the audio in an editor. This page opens the audio extractor set to MP3 at 192 kbps, which suits both music and speech and takes about 1.4 MB per minute.
Your browser decodes the video’s sound track, usually AAC in an MP4, and the LAME encoder turns it into MP3; LAME is loaded only when you convert to MP3. Up to 5 videos, 80 MB in total, are converted at once, and you can keep just a part by entering a start and end time.
How to do it
- Choose or drop up to 5 MP4 videos.
- Keep “Output format” on MP3 and the bitrate at 192 kbps; 128 kbps is enough for speech.
- To keep only part of the sound, enter a start and end time, such as 1:30 and 4:05.
- Select Run, play the MP3 on the page, then download it.
Common questions
Is there a length limit?
The limits are size and time: 80 MB of video per run, and each run may take at most 2 minutes. A long video can be split into several MP3 files with the start and end times.
Can I get the audio without re-encoding?
Yes. Choose “Original track, unchanged” to copy the sound as it is: an MP4 with AAC sound becomes an M4A file with no loss, almost instantly. Choose MP3 when a player or site needs MP3.
Why does my MP4 fail to convert?
Most often the video has no sound track, or its sound uses a codec your browser cannot decode. Try another browser, or choose “Original track, unchanged”, which copies the sound without decoding it.
