About this task

WAV files from recorders, audio workstations and CD rips are uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute of stereo sound, which is too large for email, chat apps and many players. This page opens the audio converter set to MP3 at 320 kbps, the highest MP3 bitrate at about 2.4 MB per minute, because a lossless source deserves the best quality MP3 offers.

MP3 is encoded on your device by LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder, which the page loads the first time you convert to MP3. Up to 10 WAV files and 80 MB in total, about 8 minutes of CD-quality stereo, are converted in one run; the sample rate and channels stay as they are unless you change them.

How to do it

  1. Choose or drop up to 10 WAV files.
  2. Keep “Output format” on MP3 and “Bitrate” at 320 kbps, or pick 192 kbps for files about 40 percent smaller.
  3. Select Run, play each MP3 on the page and download it, or all of them as a ZIP.

Common questions

Can I hear the difference between WAV and a 320 kbps MP3?

Most people cannot in normal listening. Keep the WAV as your master copy anyway: an MP3 cannot be turned back into the original, and re-encoding an MP3 loses a little more each time.

My WAV is larger than 80 MB. What now?

Long recordings add up quickly: an hour of CD-quality stereo WAV is about 600 MB. Split it into parts under 80 MB in an audio editor, then convert the parts in several runs.

Should I choose mono?

For speech recorded with one microphone, choose Mono and 128 kbps: both channels of such a recording carry the same sound, so the file is far smaller and sounds the same.
