About this tool
Convert Chinese characters to Hanyu Pinyin, for example to add pronunciation to study material, fill in a form that asks for a name in pinyin, or build short first-letter codes. Polyphonic characters are read from the surrounding word, so 银行行长 becomes yín háng háng zhǎng.
You can output pinyin with tone marks, tone numbers or no tones, only first letters, or each character followed by its pinyin in parentheses. Line breaks are kept, English words and numbers can be kept or dropped, and up to 1 MB of text is converted in your browser without uploading.
How to use it
- Paste the Chinese text, or select Use example.
- Under “Output”, choose “Pinyin”, “First letters” or “Characters with pinyin”, and pick a “Tones” style.
- Change the “Separator” (a space by default), “Letter case”, “Write ü as v” or “Keep other characters” if you need to.
- Select Run, preview pinyin.txt and download it.

Common questions
Are polyphonic characters always read correctly?
Readings are chosen from the word each character belongs to, so 重庆 is chóng qìng and 行长 is háng zhǎng, and each character gets one reading. Rare words, names and ambiguous phrases may still be read wrong, so check names and key terms.
Why do 一 and 不 get different tones from the dictionary?
The tone changes of 一 and 不 in speech are applied, so 一个 is written yí gè and 不对 is written bú duì.
How do I get first letters such as nhsj?
Choose “First letters” under “Output” and clear the “Separator” box: 你好世界 then gives nhsj. Turn off “Keep other characters” to drop punctuation and English, and choose “UPPERCASE” under “Letter case” for capitals.
Why does “Write ü as v” not change lǜ?
It only applies with “Tone numbers (pin1)” or “No tones”, where 绿 becomes lv4 or lv. With “Tone marks (pīn)”, the ü is kept as in lǜ.
What happens to English, digits and punctuation?
With “Keep other characters” on, they stay in place, and a run such as JavaScript 2026 is kept together as one item; turn it off to output pinyin only. In “Characters with pinyin” mode every character is kept and the separator is not used.
