About this tool

Generate UUIDs, also called GUIDs, for database primary keys, test data, file names or request IDs. Version 4 is fully random; version 7 starts with the current time, so the values sort in the order they were made, which suits database keys.

Make up to 1,000 at a time in upper or lower case, with or without hyphens or braces, then copy the list or download it as a text file. The values come from your browser’s cryptographic random generator, and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose a “Version”: “Version 4 (random)” or “Version 7 (time-ordered)”.
  2. Enter “How many” you need, from 1 to 1,000 (10 by default).
  3. Tick “Upper case”, “Hyphens” or “Braces {…}” as needed. By default the values are lower case with hyphens and no braces, and changes apply to the current list at once.
  4. Select “Generate”, then “Copy” or “Download” to keep the list.

Common questions

What is the difference between UUID v4 and v7?

In a version 4 UUID, every bit except the 6 that mark the version and variant is random, which leaves 122 random bits. A version 7 UUID (RFC 9562) starts with a 48-bit Unix timestamp in milliseconds, and a counter keeps values made in the same millisecond in order, so a batch sorts by creation time.

Can two generated UUIDs be the same?

In theory yes, but with 122 random bits in a version 4 UUID the chance is extremely small. The random bits come from the browser’s crypto.getRandomValues.

Is a GUID the same as a UUID?

Yes. GUID is Microsoft’s name for the same format. Tick “Braces {…}” and “Upper case” if you need the {XXXXXXXX-…} style.

How many UUIDs can I generate at once?

Up to 1,000 per click, and a larger number is treated as 1,000. Each click on “Generate” replaces the list with a new batch.
