About this tool

Watermark a PDF with text such as CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT or COPY: centred and turned diagonally, in a corner, or tiled across the whole page.

Set the angle, font size, colour and opacity, and limit the watermark to a page range. Latin text is drawn as real PDF text; other scripts, such as Chinese, are drawn by your browser as a transparent image. The PDF is watermarked in your browser and not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF file, or drop it on the page.
  2. Enter the “Watermark text” and pick a “Position”: centred, in a corner or tiled across the page.
  3. Adjust the “Angle”, font size, colour and “Opacity”; 0.2 to 0.4 keeps the page readable. Optionally enter page ranges.
  4. Select Run, then preview the watermarked PDF and download it.

Common questions

Does the watermark cover images and scanned pages?

Yes. It is drawn on top of everything on the page, including photos and scans, at the opacity you choose, and stays upright however a page is rotated.

Which languages can I use?

Any. Text in Western European letters uses the standard Helvetica Bold font as selectable text. Text in other scripts, such as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic or emoji, is drawn with your system's font as a transparent image at about 300 DPI.

Can someone remove the watermark?

It becomes part of each page's content rather than a layer viewers can switch off, but a PDF editor can still remove it. A watermark marks a document as confidential or a draft; it does not encrypt it.

Why is my PDF refused?

Password-protected PDFs, digitally signed PDFs (any change would break the signature), damaged files, files over 80 MB and documents over 500 pages are refused with a message saying why.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The watermark is added in your browser, and the PDF stays on your device until you close or clear the page.
