About this tool
Count the words and characters in an essay, an article or a social media post to check it against a length limit. In mixed Chinese and English text, the word count counts each Chinese character, each English word and each number once.
You also get characters with and without spaces, Chinese characters, English letters and words, digits, punctuation, spaces, lines, paragraphs, and the size in UTF-8 and GB18030 bytes. The result is a JSON report, and up to 1 MB of text is counted in your browser without uploading.

Common questions
How are words counted in mixed Chinese and English text?
Each Chinese character counts as one word, and so does each English word and each number; punctuation and spaces are not counted. For example, “今天是 2026 年。Hello, world.” has a word count of 7: four Chinese characters, two English words and one number.
What is the difference between characters and words?
characters counts every character, including spaces, punctuation and line breaks, while characters_without_spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. Use these two when a limit is given in characters rather than words.
How are it’s, well-known or 1,200 counted?
An English word may contain an apostrophe or a hyphen, so it’s and well-known each count as one word. Digits joined by a decimal point or comma, such as 3.5 or 1,200, count as one number, while digits counts every digit separately.
Why are there two byte counts?
bytes_utf8 is the size of the text in UTF-8, and bytes_gb18030 is its size in GB18030, the Chinese encoding that extends GBK. A common Chinese character takes 3 bytes in UTF-8 and 2 in GB18030, which matters when a database field or system limits length in bytes.
How are lines and paragraphs counted?
Each line break starts a new line, but a line break at the very end does not add an empty line; non_empty_lines skips blank lines. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines, so a single line break does not start a new paragraph.
