About this task
AVIF is a newer image format that some websites and phones use because it makes very small files, but many editors, office programs and upload forms still cannot open it. This page opens the image converter set to JPG at quality 0.9, to keep as much of the AVIF’s detail as possible.
AVIF files are decoded by your browser’s own decoder, which current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari include; if yours has none, the tool reports an error instead of producing a broken file. Animated AVIF files are refused. Up to 20 images of up to 25 MB each are converted on your device.
How to do it
- Choose or drop up to 20 AVIF images.
- Keep “Format” on JPG and “Quality (JPEG and WebP)” at 0.9.
- Select Run.
- Download the JPG files one by one or as a ZIP.
Common questions
Why is the JPG so much larger than the AVIF?
AVIF often needs half the bytes of a JPG, or fewer, for the same look. A JPG at quality 0.9 favours detail over size; 0.8 still looks good and is noticeably smaller.
Does the converter keep transparency?
JPG cannot, so transparent areas are filled with white. To keep the transparency of an AVIF, choose PNG or WebP under “Format”.
Which browsers can convert AVIF here?
Any browser that can display AVIF images can decode them for the converter, which includes recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Older browsers report an error for AVIF files while other formats still convert.
