About this task
Convert JPG to PNG when an editor, a print shop or a design tool asks for PNG, or before editing a picture several times so that each save does not add new JPG artifacts. This page opens the image converter with “Format” set to PNG.
PNG is lossless: the result keeps exactly the pixels decoded from the JPG, but it cannot bring back detail that JPG compression already removed, and it is usually several times larger. Phone photos are turned upright and lose their EXIF details. Up to 20 images are converted in your browser, without uploading.
How to do it
- Choose or drop up to 20 JPG images.
- Check that “Format” is PNG. Quality and background do not apply to PNG.
- Select Run.

Common questions
Does converting to PNG make a JPG sharper?
No. The blur and blocks from JPG compression are part of the decoded pixels, and PNG stores them faithfully. What PNG prevents is further loss when you edit and save the picture again.
Can the PNG have a transparent background?
Not by converting alone: a JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. Removing a background needs an image editor.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG compresses without losing anything, which suits flat graphics but not photos. A 2 MB phone JPG can turn into a PNG of 10 MB or more, so keep the JPG for sharing and use the PNG for editing.
