About this task

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, a format that Windows, many web forms and older apps cannot open. This page opens the image converter set to JPG at quality 0.9, high enough that the result looks like the original at normal viewing sizes, so the photos open everywhere.

HEIC is decoded on your device by libheif, an open-source decoder that the page loads only when you add a HEIC or HEIF file. Up to 20 photos of up to 25 MB each are converted at once. The JPGs keep the full resolution, are rotated the way the phone showed them, and leave out EXIF details such as the GPS location.

How to do it

  1. Choose or drop up to 20 HEIC or HEIF photos, for example copied from an iPhone or downloaded from iCloud.
  2. Leave “Format” on JPG and “Quality (JPEG and WebP)” at 0.9, or lower the quality for smaller files.
  3. Select Run. The first HEIC file takes a moment longer while the decoder loads.
  4. Download the JPGs one by one or all together as a ZIP.

Common questions

Why is the JPG larger than the HEIC file?

HEIC often needs about half the bytes of a JPG for the same photo, so the JPG is larger, especially at quality 0.9. Lower the quality to 0.8 for smaller files, or run the JPGs through the image compressor afterwards.

What happens to Live Photos and burst shots?

A HEIC file that holds several still images, such as a burst, is converted from its primary image, the one the Photos app shows. HEIC image sequences are rejected, and the video part of a Live Photo is a separate file that this tool does not read.

Can I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?

Yes. In Settings, Camera, Formats, choose “Most Compatible” and new photos are saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC and still need converting.
