About this task
Indian passport photos are 4.5 × 3.5 cm, the 35 × 45 mm format, in colour with a plain white background, and the face should fill about 70 to 80 percent of the photo’s height. This page opens the passport photo maker with that size and a white background, and sizes the head from the chin to the top of the hair to about 34 mm.
Several Indian missions abroad now follow ICAO guidelines that ask for 630 × 810 pixel digital photos: set “Resolution” to 457 DPI and the photo comes out at exactly that size. Some missions still ask for 2 × 2 inch photos; for those, choose Custom size with 51 × 51 mm.
How to do it
- Take a photo facing the camera with both ears visible if possible, a neutral expression and no shadows on the face or background.
- Choose the photo; the photo type is “India passport: 35 × 45 mm” with a white background.
- For a 630 × 810 pixel upload, enter 457 in “Resolution”; for an upload size limit, fill in the smallest and largest file size.

Common questions
What size is an Indian passport photo?
4.5 cm high and 3.5 cm wide, that is 35 × 45 mm, with a white background. A few missions abroad ask for 2 × 2 inches instead, so read the instructions of the office you apply to.
Why does the photo need to be 630 × 810 pixels?
That is the digital size in the ICAO-based photo guidelines several Indian missions publish. It is the same 35 × 45 shape at a higher resolution, which is why 457 DPI gives exactly those pixels.
Can I take the photo at home?
Yes, if the light is even and the face is sharp: stand a metre or two in front of the camera, which is held at eye level, and let the page replace the background with white.
