About this task
Schengen visa applications use the biometric passport photo format of ICAO, the same as most European passports: 35 × 45 mm, a plain light background and a head that fills 70 to 80 percent of the height, 32 to 36 mm from the chin to the crown. This page opens the passport photo maker with that size, a light grey background and the head sized to 34 mm, the middle of the range.
The consulate or visa centre usually wants one or two recent prints, no older than six months, and some take a digital copy. You get both from one run: a 300 DPI JPG and a 4 × 6 inch sheet with eight copies, plus a report of the measurements.
How to do it
- Take a photo looking straight at the camera with a neutral expression, eyes open and hair away from the eyes.
- Choose it here; the photo type is “Schengen visa or EU passport: 35 × 45 mm”.
- Select Run and check the report. If the consulate prefers white, choose White in “Background colour” and run again.
- Print the 4 × 6 in sheet at 100% scale and cut out the copies you need.
Common questions
Is the photo the same for every Schengen country?
The 35 × 45 mm biometric format is used across the Schengen area, but each consulate or visa centre can ask for a particular shade of background or number of copies. Check the checklist of the country you apply to.
Light grey or white background?
Both are commonly accepted as plain light backgrounds. Light grey keeps light hair and pale skin from blending into the background, which is why the page uses it; switch to White if your checklist asks for it.
Can I smile in a Schengen visa photo?
No. The biometric format asks for a neutral expression with the mouth closed, looking straight at the camera.
Can I use the same photo for an EU passport?
Most EU passports use the same 35 × 45 mm format, so the photo usually fits; some countries take the passport photo themselves or have extra rules, so check the issuing office.
