About this task
A US passport photo is 2 × 2 inches with a plain white or off-white background. The head, from the chin to the top of the hair, must measure 1 to 1⅜ inches, which is 50 to 69 percent of the photo’s height, and the eyes must sit between 1⅛ and 1⅜ inches above the bottom edge. This page opens the passport photo maker set to these rules: it replaces the background with white, levels the eyes, and places the head and eye line in the middle of their ranges.
The photo comes out as a 600 × 600 pixel JPG at 300 DPI and under 240 KB, as the DS-160 visa form asks, together with a 4 × 6 inch sheet of six copies for printing and a report of each measurement.
How to do it
- Take a photo straight on, without glasses, in even light, with your whole head, your shoulders and some space above your hair in the picture.
- Choose the photo here; the photo type is already “US passport or visa: 2 × 2 in”.
- Select Run and check that every line of the report says PASS.
- Download passport-photo.jpg for an online form, or the 4 × 6 in sheet to print; a paper application needs two identical photos.
Common questions
Can I wear glasses in a US passport photo?
No. Since November 2016 glasses are not allowed in US passport photos, except with a signed medical statement. Take them off before you take the photo.
Can I use this photo for the DS-160 visa form?
Yes. The form asks for a square JPG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels and at most 240 KB, which is what this page produces; the report shows both values.
How do I print it at a pharmacy or photo kiosk?
Order the 4 × 6 in sheet as a standard 4 × 6 print, with no cropping or borders. It holds six 2 × 2 inch copies in two rows of three, so one print covers three paper applications.
Which background colour is right?
White or off-white, with no shadows or patterns. The page uses pure white; choose Off-white in “Background colour” if you prefer a softer tone.
