About this task
Printed UK passport photos are 45 millimetres high and 35 millimetres wide, with a plain cream or light grey background, and the head from the chin to the crown must be 29 to 34 millimetres tall. A white background is not on that list, so this page opens the passport photo maker set to the UK size with a light grey background, and sizes the head to the middle of the allowed range.
You get the photo as a JPG at 300 DPI (413 × 531 pixels), a 4 × 6 inch sheet with eight copies separated by thin cutting lines, and a report of the measurements. For the online passport service, GOV.UK asks instead for an uncropped digital photo of at least 600 × 750 pixels showing your head, shoulders and upper body, which it crops itself.
How to do it
- Take a photo facing forward with a neutral expression and your mouth closed, in even light without shadows, leaving space around your head and shoulders.
- Choose the photo; the photo type is set to “UK passport: 35 × 45 mm” and the background to light grey.
- Select Run and read the report; adjust “Head size” and run again if a check fails.
- Print the 4 × 6 in sheet at 100% scale and cut out two identical photos for a paper form.
Common questions
Can a UK passport photo have a white background?
GOV.UK asks for a plain cream or light grey background that contrasts with your face and hair. Light grey is used here; choose Off-white in “Background colour” for a cream tone.
Can I use these photos for an online application?
Not as they are: the online service wants the whole uncropped photo, at least 600 × 750 pixels, and crops it itself. Upload your original photo there, taken against a plain light background.
Does someone need to sign my photo?
For some paper applications, such as a first adult passport, someone who knows you must countersign one of the two photos. Check the form’s instructions; the photos themselves are made the same way.
Can I wear glasses?
GOV.UK advises taking glasses off for the photo. If you must wear them, there must be no glare and the frames must not cover your eyes; the report does not check this.
