About this task
1080 × 1080 pixels is the standard square size for Instagram feed posts, and it works for most other social and shop listings that show square images. This page opens the image resizer with that size and “Fill the size, crop the excess”, so every image fills the whole square: a landscape photo loses equal strips on the left and right, a portrait one at the top and bottom.
“Allow upscaling” is on, so a picture smaller than 1080 pixels is enlarged to fill the square, which can look soft. To keep the whole picture instead, switch “Fit” to “Fit inside, pad to the exact size” and pick a padding colour. Up to 20 JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or TIFF images of up to 8 MB each are resized at once, and each keeps its format.
How to do it
- Choose or drop up to 20 images.
- Check that “Width” and “Height” are 1080 and “Fit” is “Fill the size, crop the excess”.
- Select Run and look at the previews: the crop is always centred.
- Download the squares one by one or all together as a ZIP.
Common questions
Can I choose which part of the photo is kept?
Not here, because the crop is centred. If the subject is off to one side, crop the photo to a square around it first with the image cropper, then resize it to 1080 × 1080.
How do I make a square without cutting anything off?
Choose “Fit inside, pad to the exact size”. The whole photo is scaled to fit and centred, and the empty space is filled with the “Padding colour”, white by default; enter transparent to keep it see-through in PNG and WebP results.
Is the quality reduced?
JPG and WebP results are saved at quality 0.92, which keeps them sharp, and PNG stays lossless. A 1080 × 1080 JPG photo is usually a few hundred kilobytes.
